Cathedral of Piura
It was founded under the tutelage of the Blessed Virgin of Rising and the archangel Saint Gabriel in 1588. It’s located in Huancavelica Street, in front of the Main Square.
The cathedral keeps a "churrigueresque" style (exaggerated ornamentation) altarpiece of the Virgin of Fatima carved in cedar of Nicaragua and covered in gold sheet. It was probably one of the first ones in Peru. It’s about 350 years old. Also, a pulpit stands out. It’s also carved and covered in gold sheet. There is the Immaculate Conception in high relief. It belongs to XVII century.
The high altar was destroyed in the earthquake of 1912 but it was rebuilt by the Spanish sculptor Julián Aragua in a "plateresco" (silver) style.
Its façade and towers are of the neo renaissance style.. It has 20 Doric columns, 10 on each side. And in front of them, there are "Via Crucis" views. Also, we can find:

  • "The Lord of Miracles", the first painting brought to Piura. It has a baroque influence.
  • A "Baltaquino" altarpiece of "The Lord of Agony".
  • An altar of "The Lord Captive" in polychromatic wood.
  • The child Jesus of Praga.
  • The Blessed Virgin of "El Carmen"
  • The Lord of the Divine Compassion or Mercy"
  • The Immaculate Conception
As a principal and centre church, it keeps the Piura parish church files.

"San Francisco" Church
As the most important cities founded by Spaniards in Peru, the Franciscan order built its convent and church in the old Florida street (nowadays it’s called Lima Street).
The High Altar ins neoclassic style, it has two vaulted niches and four circular shaped columns, two on each side. One of the most important aspects of this church is its typical set of chairs of brown lateral wood where the friars were in the religious acts in the old times.
Nowadays, there is a façade with only one tower where there are two bells.

"San Sebastian" Church
It’s located in the Moquegua street, between Tacna and Libertad streets. It was given to the Redeeming Missionaries on July 8th in 1911.
Its colourful windows with "San Sebastian, San Gerardo, Santa Rosa, Sagrado Corazón de Jesus ans San José" images are stood out.
Also, there is a crypt where masses are celebrated daily as a reminder of dead people.
In this church, there are a lot of parishioners of the "Virgin of Perpetuo Socorro"

"Maria Auxiliadora" Church
With a peaceful European architecture, this church was built in 1933 and inaugurated on May 14th in 1939.
Salesiano congregation is in charge of this church identified with our community, being May the principal celebrations of "Maria Auxiliadora". Every May 24th, thousand of parishioners pay homage to her and walk in procession through the main streets of Piura.

"Cruz del Norte" Church
In 1853, in the place where there was the "Cruz del Norte" temple, there was a rustic chapel with a wooden cross, symbol of the Christian faith left by the missionaries. On March 6th, neighbours of the Northern neighbourhood formed a helping society to honour the blessed cross.
